How to practice

From Handstand, press firmly through both palms and keep your arms long. Slowly reach one leg forward and the other backward into a split. Keep your hips above the shoulders, steady through your center, and breathe slowly.

Benefits

Builds shoulder and trunk strength while developing inverted balance and controlled weight bearing through the arms. Separating the legs adds hip mobility and control over changes in balance.

Who should avoid or modify

  • Learn with a qualified teacher and a planned safe exit. Avoid with arm or shoulder injury, glaucoma, or uncontrolled high blood pressure; do not begin during pregnancy or kick up without control. Do not chase a full split at the cost of shoulder stability or a safe landing.
